HER HEALTH
“Why isn’t this taught in school?” or “I wish I had learnt this years ago, it would have saved my younger self years of pain and discomfort every month!”
These are things my clients have been saying to me again and again over the years and it got me thinking .. how could I empower teenage girls with the knowledge about hormones, the menstrual cycle and female health that I wish I had known when I was 15?
And so, Her Health was born.
Young girls deserve to begin their period with confidence. They deserve to feel informed about how their menstrual cycle works and empowered knowing that there are ways to minimise the downsides that can come with the phases throughout the month .. and that is exactly what the Her Health programme does.
Globally, and in Ireland, periods are causing girls to be absent from school; this is a multi-faceted issue that is driven by two main issues;
– Period Poverty (inability to afford sanitary products) and,
– Debilitating period pain and other menstrual symptoms
A recent study by Plan International Ireland with 1,100 young girls aged between 12 and 19, found that 61% have missed school on their period and 13% of girls miss an entire school day at least once a month.
